He made the
observation while talking to reporters after meeting BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia
at her Gulshan office on Thursday night.
Ahmed, who formed a separate
Jatiya Party faction following his expulsion from the HM Ershad-led party, said:
“The Opposition’s demand was postponement of the elections which are one-sided.
That has not been met.”
He observed that any effort for compromise turned
meaningless if the election process continued ‘this way’.
“I think UN
Secretary General’s emissary Taranco’s mission failed because of government’s
stubbornness.”
The veteran politician said the nation had plunged into
dark after the failure of the UN mission.
He said a special council of
the Jatiya Party led by him would be held on Dec 20 and he went to BNP chief’s
office to invite her to the meet.
Ahmed led a six-member delegation for
an one-hour-long meeting with Khaleda.
The team had in it Golam Mohsi,
TIM Fazle Rabbi, Nawab Ali Abbas and HM Goalm Reza.
BNP acting Secretary
General Mirza Fakhrul Islam was present at the meeting.
Ahmed said his
party would be with the Opposition in the ongoing movement for a non-party
polls-time government.
He urged Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to quit and
hand over power to the President for reaching a solution to the political
crisis.
“Otherwise nothing but failure, disgrace and bloodshed will await
you.”
Ahmed was expelled from the Jatiya Party after being vocal against
Ershad’s decision to join the upcoming parliamentary polls under the incumbent
government led by Hasina.
